Battles of the Past

So friends, here we give you a debate as to whether or not schools named after Confederate generals of the Civil War should change their names.

The article that is going to be used is not available online for us to use, but there are hard copies of Current Events in Ned's room (maybe others', I'm not sure). Read the article 'Name Dropping' in the back of the zine, at the grand and large page seven.

Schools named after Civil War Confederate generals shouldn't change their names.

I dont think that we should change the names of schools because thats like trying to hide from history. We shouldnt change history because people are bitching about names of schools.

i agree. would you let a black man play gearge washington in a play? no. why is that? because it is historicaly in-accurate. we shouldnt change things, just because a couple of people are getting butt-hurt over some thing being supposedly "racist". i think that word is vastly over used, and that people shouldnt have the right to try and erase history just because it isnt politicaly correct.

i am stuck. we should not change it cause thats our history and we shouldn't hide it because of laws that have changed and now slavery is illegal. yet, why should we have our schools named after men who fought for owning other men? thats repugnant.

I think that if the majority of a school board wants to change the name of a school, then they should be able to do that. However, instead of just renaming the school after more white people, they should find African American people who fought for segregation, not just in the civil war, because segregation lasted much longer than that. And also, if the school has more important issues, such as education, then they should take care of those first.

Its bloody freedom of speech!
If a school wishes to be called after a confederate general then i say that they should be able to. i dont exactly aprove of it, but i think that they should be able to.
(im determined not to mention nazis.)
On the other hand, if the confederacy was the winning side, then the school the would be under fire would be the one named after a union general.

Stop referring to Nazis for everything! And when you say you're determined not to mention Nazis, you're mentioning Nazis! Use your heads and be more creative you idiots!

Consider the reason these schools were named as they were. It would be one thing if it was named because the general was a local hero and represented courage and valor, but if it was merely an attempt to get back at the county for stopping segragation then you have a problem.

Well I think there are more pressing matters to agrue about, anyway I dont have much of an opinion, but I think that there good in the act of changing the names than the bad it would bring. for the most part, I am neutral in the arguement.
