Battles of the Past

So friends, here we give you a debate as to whether or not schools named after Confederate generals of the Civil War should change their names.

The article that is going to be used is not available online for us to use, but there are hard copies of Current Events in Ned's room (maybe others', I'm not sure). Read the article 'Name Dropping' in the back of the zine, at the grand and large page seven.

Schools named after Civil War Confederate generals shouldn't change their names.

Tell me stuff...Go!

Beware!

Hallo, hallo, my brother droogs.

Sorry, I'm in a rather Clockwork Orange mood. I'll stick to the slang of today. So here is your statement to agree or disagree with!

Parents should have the right to influence official district curriculum, including--but not limited to--literature.

And here are your articles to viddy--look at, I mean.

For those of you lazy -- Wikipedia!

For those of you less so -- The Examiner!

And for those of you local -- The Spokesman Review!

Agree? Disagree? Post it in the comments!

To Ban or Not To Ban, That is The Question!

When considering the appropriateness of Cormac McCarthy's "The Road" as high school reading material, it might be interesting to read up on what's going on in Coeur d'Alene. Please read this article from the Spokesman Review on banning books and answer the following questions:

When, if ever, is it appropriate for schools to remove books from library shelves? With that in mind, do you feel the school board in Coeur d'Alene is doing the right thing by removing "Brave New World" from the reading list?

Thanks. Giving. Thoughts?

And the debate over Thanksgiving rages on.....

Read the Slate article, work it over in your mind a little bit, and answer the following question:

"What's the proper view to take on Thanksgiving? Is it a civic holiday, a religious celebration, or nothing more than an unwelcome reminder of the ultimate fate of the Native Americans?"

The AntiChrist?

Could Obama be the AntiChrist?

He will be worshiped by many people[Rev. 13:8]
(Many people like Obama)

He will try to change the laws, perhaps to gain advantage for his new kingdom [Daniel 7:25]
(hmm,.. lets see,.. our gun writes? the second amendment?)

He will rise from obscurity...a "little horn" [Daniel 7:8]
(political background?)

He will speak boastfully [Daniel 7:8; Rev. 13:5]
(Smooth talker?)

He will oppress the saints and be successful for 3 1/2 years [Daniel 7:25]
(lets wait and see what happens after three and a half years,...)

He will appear to survive a fatal injury [Rev. 13:3; 17:8]
(hmm,..)

After the injury he will be impowered by the devil himself [Rev.13:2]
(hmmm,..)

His arival on the world scene will be accomplished by miracles, signs and wonders [Rev. 2:9]
"The Antichrist will be a world leader, he'll have supernatural powers,"
(Jewish people will believe that this is the messiah)
(Louis Farrakhan (Nation of Islam) called him the Messiah)

He will claim to be god [Thessalonians 2:4]
(hmmm,..)

His name will relate to the number six hundred and sixty six-but not necerily obious fashion.[Rev. 13:17-18].
(Obama Hussein Barrak-18 letters,... 6*3=18,...three six's, sound suspitious? I think so.)

He will honer a "God" of military. His whole focus and attention will be the military. He will conquer lands and distribute them [Daniel 11:39-44]
(does he like the military or not?)

"According to the evangelical interpretation of the books of Daniel and Revelation, the Antichrist will make his appearance before Christ makes his, and his is looking kinda imminent. The Antichrist, in this reading, will be a world leader who strikes a peace deal with Israel, only to betray the Jewish state and make war on it, until Jesus comes to the rescue."

"The AntiChrist is supposed to be in his 40s"
(Obama is 45,...)

I think that Obama could be the AntiChrist, I am not saying that he is, I am just saying that is a posibility and there is evidence to back him up. I am not racist just to let you know and I like muslim people, so don't try and accuse me of what I am not.

Why Rivercity?

why is it that no one in this school does any thing. all any one does is go on hypster or pandora radio, get bored and wander around until lunch. then we come back and talk the afternoon away. we then proceed to wait until the last minute and do a project in an hour and a half on drugs and say "i learned a lot from this". how can any one learn anything in our current environment. this is not the rantings of a hypocritical a-hole, this is a call to action. we all including myself need to stop bitching and moaning about how bad this school is, when its our own fault. its near impossible for any one of us to get our work done with out support from our peers. there are a very few students in this school that would like to do nothing all day. one person cant just decide to do work, we all have to decide, for this school to work. THIS IS NOT ANY ONES SCHOOL BUT OURS. please realize this and lets fix all this. give me all the crap you want for this but every one of us knows it's true.

Right-i-o, kiddies. This week's down-to-the-wire debate topic is Physician Assisted Suicide. DUNDUNDUN.
M'kay. So here's your official statement. You either agree or disagree, but only after you've read at least one of my links!

Terminally ill, competent, adult Washington residents, who are medically predicted to have six months or less to live should have the right to request and self-administer lethal medication prescribed by a physicians.

Bloggers

I am severely put out by your participation, or rather, lack thereof. I have only got six comments on the post concerning the baggy-pants issue. There are fourteen approved authors for the blog (besides Ned and I) and twenty-four pending invitations. That means that twenty-four of you didn't even bother to check the mail given to me to accept the invitation I sent you.
I am put out. This means that only eight people--I will assume Ned read at least one of the articles--were qualified to debate today. This is very disheartening, RLA.

Upset'dly yours,

PS: RLA, get some grammar skills! I think there are sign-language monkeys with better grammar than you.

THE POPE HITS WASHINGTON YAY!!!!...

Its a good day to be a Catholic... because this cool guy visited us in the holy United States of America. The Pope spreads love and compassion to all parts of America. So sing your Hail Marys you sinners and enjoy the sunny day God gives you.

Also for a bit of facts this is the 1st time in 26 years that a Pope has visited our Beloved America. hmm only 2nd time in history...interesting.

Mormons and shootouts...oh nos

Warren Jeffs, the so called "prophet" for some Mormons has followers all across America and even into Canada--but this comes with a price, the price to follow in the ways of polygamy. Soon after a phone call to authorities by a anonymous girl stating she had been abused by her "spiritual husband," a large police raid was called into actions that now is sparking controversy...So, after reading the article answer this question. Should the government forcefully disband a organisation because of a "single" abuse inside the organisation, only because of the idea of polygamy?

Fido!

Recently, I have watched the greatest independent film of all time...well probably not yet it was still rather good.

Fido is a very simple movie..."Space dust" is transferred to earth by unknown means and reanimates the dead turning them into zombies (this sparks a war that takes place of WWII.) The zombies ultimately loose and are fitted with colliers that repress there "must eat" instincts. The colliers enable them to be assimilated into jobs with no pay...(if you take away the colliers zombies sound like something else...hmmmm.)

Timmy Robenson's family just acquired a new zombie to help around the house, and soon Timmy falls in love with his new "pet" which he names Fido. Fido breaks out of his collier and kills a grumpy neighbor named Mrs. Henderson and Timmy must hide the evidence to the murder before poor Fido is sent away to the wild lands (a prison for zombies.)

The Movie takes place in a busy 50's era and the movie portrays that flawlessly (except of course for the zombies.)

Anyways the movie is rated "R" for violence and cannibalism...hmm probably so.

Zombies just want love too!

Boycotting China?

As you may have heard, the 2008 Summer Olympics are being held in Beijing, China. Many activists and politicians believe that it is the responsibility of the United States and other leading countries to boycott the opening ceremonies in order to send a message to China about their repression of civil liberties in their own country and their continuing mistreatment of Tibet.

Please read this article and answer the following question:

Should the United States boycott the opening ceremonies of this Summer's Olympics in Beijing?

Please defend your answer in 500 words.

Dead, Death, To Die

Soooooooo. The baby octopi are all dead. Really, we saw this coming. We're not a professional laboratory and those little jerks were tiny. It was an impossible task, but a nice dream.
I fully believe that the babies deserve a funeral and the Septapus Keepers deserve some credit as well. Those babies lasted almost a week, which is probably more than any other soon-to-be mother will last. A WEEK!
On the other hand, maybe we can make Cthulhu eat now. LIVE, CTHULHU, LIVE!! While I certainly want to be able to look at a preserved septapus in a pickle jar, I think I'll take a live Cthulhu any day. It's just too bad that we had to get the pregnant cephalopod.

Gunner Palace

Last Friday, we watched another documentary on the Iraq War. Unlike "No End in Sight," the film "Gunner Palace" showed us the Iraq War from the ground up, through the eyes of ordinary soldiers being asked to do
extraordinary things.

In your mind, what was the most surprising aspect of "Gunner Palace?" In other words, what surprised you most about the lives of the soldiers in "Gunner Palace?" Did you gain more respect for the soldiers, or lose the respect you had?

No End in Sight

Well, that was depressing. Please respond to this post with a detailed description of what went wrong in Iraq according to the makers for the documentary. After you've done that, please answer the following questions:

Considering how badly the Pentagon screwed up Iraq, do we owe it to the Iraqi people to remain Iraq until the country is stable, peaceful, and prosperous? Or, considering how badly the Pentagon screwed up Iraq, do we owe to the Iraqi people to leave ASAP?

What's your take?

Bush in Africa = Good Times

Let's be honest: not many people like George W. Bush.

Now, you can argue over whether the overwhelming negativity directed towards our President is the result of Mr. Bush's own mistakes, massive media bias, simple partisan hatred, or a complex reflection of our own insecurities and fears about the word. What you can't argue, however, is that he isn't the most popular guy in the global neighborhood.....except in Africa, that is.

For today's blog, please read this article and answer the following set of questions as fairly as you can:

Why is President Bush so well liked in Africa? Do you think he deserves this praise? Do you think all of the negativity directed towards President Bush in America is justified, or do you think we should cut the man some slack considering the state of the world he inherited on September 11th, 2001?

Bi-Party!

Soo. Here we are again. On a similar note, why are we here... I coulda sworn I just knew... Oh. Right.

Welcome to America. You can choose your president, utilize free speech and eat fast food until your head--or stomach--asplodes. How do we choose our president? Why, the people vote for the candidate they like!

You can vote for whoever you like, as long as they're on the ballot, but if you want to vote for somebody who has a chance, you better pick a candidate from one of the two main parties: Democrat or Republican.

Now, these parties are very nice. The champagne at the Republican party was phenomenal and the Democrats had astoundingly loud music. I'm not even sure what they were playing. But I'd like to go to a party more suited for my needs.

Many people think like this in America. They don't like the bi-party system that basically narrows the presidential candidates down to two options: This Person or That Person doesn't really fit the bill of president, but who else is there?

The founding fathers of America saw that a bi-party system was a ridiculous notion as well, thought they maybe didn't foresee the extremely loooong campaign trails of the twenty-first century candidate. I think it's hardly likely the founders of America wanted candidates spending a year of their time--this is especially true of senators and representatives--not doing their job just so they can maybe attain the presidency.

In short, the independents of America should band together in their lack of Democrat and Republican politics and present our own candidate.

Washington DC update

This is Dalten here,
I dont have an account to post one so im on neds here.
Anyways overall this place is pretty cool.
We sleep in a homeless shelter though and that took alittle getting used to,
Washington DC in general is so screwed up its not even funny.
The place really really pisses me off.
I hate it here.
But thats just DC lol.
The people in the homeless shelter are awesome and nothing like the ones in spokane.
I like to think of it like this,
The people here are "Homeless" and the people in spokane are "Bums"
I mean there are a few "Bums" here but the majority of the people are nice and easy to get along with.
They have some truely awesome stories and are really cool to talk to.
Like its not what you think a homeless person would be like at all.
We have all of our stuff in a room and none of its even ended up missing.
Its really weird here,
there seems to be more black people in this one building then there is in all of washington.
I'm not saying that to be rascist or anything it's just the truth.
We've visited alot of really cool places like the lincoln memorial and the whitehouse.
but we have done our fair share of work too that is for sure.
The food here sucks (in the mall)
its not even funny.
All the fountain soda taste like friggen bleach and yeah whatever.
the traffic here is crazy too,
you cant go like 2 or 3 minutes without hearing a siren.
we've taken the subway everyday so far and that can be pretty weird at times lol.
Overall ive met some awesome people and seen some awesome things that I never thought I would.
Colby, Kyle and I have been refurbishing computers like crazy.
Neds been being Ned.
Chris has been well chris lol.
Chenoa has been taking pictures like crazy.
Colby been flirting with everything that walks,
well nevermind that flirting with EVERYTHING.
Chad almost got the flight attendants number,
(she was trying to give it to him??)
Kyle has been being kyle.
Jasmine is scared of elevators.
I have been scared to death,
Excited,
nervous and scared lol yeah...

anyways im out here so peace out people.

Wednesday, February 6, 2008

So.....we're sleeping on the floor of the largest homeless shelter in the United States. Read a little bit about crime, drug use, and poverty in Washington DC and then imagine what our immediate surroundings look like. They're not pretty. Last night was sketchy, but we're beginning to adjust to our new surroundings and fellow shelter-dwellers. Pictures to come....

How are things in Spokane?

Tomorrow...or rather today as you are reading it now...anyway
Its super Tuesday...a big event were Democratic leaders face off to win delegates.(Republicans also face off to win delegates but I'm acting on a bias that...it doesn't matter anyway)

Now 24 states will be voting Tuesday in which...hold on let me tally...the Democratic leaders need 2025 delegates to win the race for democratic supremacy which in turn goes one to face...the republican candidate....at anyrate, Tuesday will be a glorious day..and in my opinion I hope the day ends up just like the superbowl....with Hillary Clinton as the patriots and my man Obama as the lucky Giants wooo football analogy yay!!!
Enjoy...ill make sure its on line Tuesday..

Rivercity and Grades...,,

Welcome back. I hope you enjoyed your second "snow day" of the week. Anyway, since it's semester grade time here in West Valley, I thought I'd ask you a question about grades. Currently at RLA, we only grant "pass" and "fail" grades for your projects, seminars, and classes. In your opinion, would it be better to continue along this path or switch to some kind of "letter grade" system like more traditional schools? If we were to switch to "letter grades," how would you suggest we go about doing this? How would you like to be graded? And if you'd like to stick with the "pass/fail" system we have now, what's you reason?

Humanity's Downfall

Hey lazy ramen-eaters,

So you can all see the poll. Cthulhu will end the world, or if he's late--you know Cthulhu. Heavy sleeper--it'll be Ancient Forgotten EViLS. So, why do you all think that the forgotten is so much more like to bite us than new developing technology or vice-versa? I know Trogdor's opinion--Robots, people-- and I'd like to hear some validation.

Not to take the edge off this beautiful snow day or anything, but I want all of you to know that we're going to have to make it up at some point later on down the road. With that in mind, here's my question to any of you who might cruise by the blog on this unexpected day off: would you rather have the day off, knowing you're going to have to give one up later in the year, or tough it out and go to school, preserving the few scheduled days off we have left?

Little White Lies

Should we take the 'Leadership' part out of our school name, Rivercity Leadership Academy? The whole thing seems like a misnomer to me--By the way, if you don't know it, look up misnomer. It'll make you happy.-- seeing as there is little excellence and no leadership at Rivercity.
Our name portrays us as these hard-working students who probably eat healthy meals and work out on a daily basis. As anybody attending the school knows, we are absolutely none of these things.
Maybe we should be 'Rivercity Skool for Lazy Bums,' misspelling intended.

King Corn

Well, that was interesting. Now that you've had some time to think, what lessons have learned from King Corn?

Specifically, I'd like you to answer the following three questions:

1. How did the government's agricultural policies in the 70's lead to the King Corn we see today?

2. What are some of the negative consequences, both for the American farmer and our own health, of the rise of King Corn?

3. If you've got a problem with situation in America today as it relates to the issues raised in King Corn, what can you as a consumer do about it?

Yo,

When you get the chance, please post your thoughts on the Civil Rights seminar from Wednesday morning.
Your teacher, McCall Hanson, and I would like to know - specifically - what you learned from the two hour class.

Please tell us in a clearly written and well organized paragraph.

MLK Jr. vs. Hip Hop

It's Tuesday.

It's not Monday anymore.

Woo-hoo!

Anyway, we're a week away from Marting Luther King Day and two weeks deep into our unit on civic engagement. One of the most important exercises in civic thinking is the discussion over what we'd like our community's values to be and how to ensure those values become a reality.

Fortunately for us, there's a free event at the Garland Theater tonight from 6 - 8 on this very topic. Specifically, tonight's event pits the progressive vision of Dr. King against the exploitative and often times demeaning culture of modern Hip - Hop. To learn more about this debate and the event going on tonight, please read this article and post your thoughts below.

A paragraph should be plenty.

See you at the Garland,

-Ned-

2008: Year of The Outsider?

Was it just me, or did yesterday seem to drag along slower than most Mondays?

And on another note altogether, John McCain can be one creepy looking dude. I realize that the man spent years being tortured and abused inside a Vietnamese prison, but come on. That's just eerie.

Anyway, for today's blog response, I'd like you to read this article from Slate.com on the unlikely similarities between John McCain and Barack Obama. After reading the article, please answer the following question in the form of a response to this blog. As always, each answer should be at least a paragraph in length.

1. According to the author, Jacob Weisberg, how are McCain and Obama alike?

2. Do you agree with him?

That is all. Have a productive morning,

-Ned-
I have succeeded.

Education = Civics?

Happy Monday,

As we discussed last week, American political thought has always been tied to the idea of "positive liberty."

In cast you forgot, "positive liberty" deals with the freedom and imperative to "do something for the good of the community," as opposed to "negative liberty," which deals only with "freedom FROM" the rules and regulations of the community.

Many famous political thinkers have thus believed that it is the primary role of public education to provide students with a civic education. Do you agree?

For today's blog, please respond to the following questions. One paragraph for each question should do the trick.

1. Do you believe that the first priority of public schools should be to educate their students in the political
and civic duties of American citizens?

2. Do you believe that RLA, or any other school you've attended, has made this their first priority?

3. Do you think American high school students receive a civic education that prepares them for the
responsibility of "positive liberty" in the United States?

Have fun,

-Ned-

RLA = Iowa?

Looks like you guys got it right: Obama wins big for the Democrats and Huckabee carries the Republicans.

Good Work.

For today's blog, I'd like you to assume the role of a political columnist and write two paragraphs. The first should be about why Mike Huckabee will never win the presidential election and the second should be about why Obama has no chance. In other words, what is it about each of these two candidates that may make them unelectable in a national election?

Your opinions on the last topic were great. Keep it up!

Iowa Caucus

Welcome back to RLA everybody....

We're going to spend the next month focused on Civics. To kick that off, we're going to be engaging in a little presidential politics. As you may or may not know, the fine folks of Iowa will caucus today in order to vote for their favorite candidates. The Iowa Caucus is the first of many state-level primary elections that will ultimately determine the official Democratic and Republican candidates for president. Whoever wins in Iowa will be carrying a great deal of momentum into the other states, which makes Iowa an important state for the candidates. In fact, Republican Candidate Mitt Romney has already spent in excess of $8.5 million dollars campaigning in Iowa.

With all of that in mind, I would like you to go to CNN's Political Site, read about Romney, Huckabee, Clinton, Obama, Edwards and Clinton, vote in the poll on our blog, and submit an error free full-paragraph post on who you chose and why. Be specific about your reasons. Read about the issues. It's time Americans stopped voting for the candidate with the best haircut.

Your post is due by lunch.
