Boycotting China?

As you may have heard, the 2008 Summer Olympics are being held in Beijing, China. Many activists and politicians believe that it is the responsibility of the United States and other leading countries to boycott the opening ceremonies in order to send a message to China about their repression of civil liberties in their own country and their continuing mistreatment of Tibet.

Please read this article and answer the following question:

Should the United States boycott the opening ceremonies of this Summer's Olympics in Beijing?

Please defend your answer in 500 words.

I think we should attend the Olympics in China or wherever they end up. For one, it's not fair to our athletes who have been training not to be represented. Also, though I see the contradiction in holding the Olympics in a communist country, we should focus on the competition instead of the current political tension. The Olympics have always been a way for the world to set aside their differences for a few days at least, and unless we want to see the tradition of the Olympics fade away with globalization we should participate.

Bastards are everywhere. People who are racist can't honestly say that they give a darn about human rights. Just because a country is different doesn't mean its bad. If you take a closer look at the world, you may find more things you may not like.
